The Gold Medal stretch of the Arkansas River, as Colorado Parks & Wildlife designates it, runs from near Leadville down to Parkdale, just above the Royal Gorge. The water through Canon City is not part of that designation. Both brown and rainbow trout thrive in these waters, with fish regularly reaching 15 inches and larger specimens present throughout.
Access Points
The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area provides numerous public access points along the river. Many spots allow wade fishing from shore or mid-river, while drift boat trips cover more water for those seeking variety.
What You Need
A valid Colorado fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Local fly shops provide current conditions, hatch reports, and guided trip options. Both fly fishing and spin fishing produce results depending on conditions and personal preference.
