A brief overview of the area
The Royal Gorge is a canyon on the Arkansas River near Canon City, Colorado. At over 1,000 feet deep, it's one of the deepest canyons in Colorado. The area has been a tourist destination since the late 1800s, when the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad built a line through the gorge.
Today, the region draws visitors for whitewater rafting, scenic views, the Royal Gorge Bridge (built in 1929), and various outdoor activities. Canon City serves as the main hub for services, with a historic downtown and a variety of local businesses.
