Colorado Parks & Wildlife lists 102 miles of the upper Arkansas River as Gold Medal trout water, from near Leadville down to the Highway 50 bridge at Parkdale, just above the Royal Gorge. Brown trout dominate the deeper pools while rainbows prefer faster riffles.
Access and Technique
The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area provides numerous public access points. Wade fishing is popular in many stretches, while drift boat trips cover more water. Local fly shops offer current hatch information and guided trips.
