Safety Considerations
Basic precautions for enjoying the region safely
Stay Hydrated
The high-desert climate and elevation (5,000–7,000 ft) can cause dehydration quickly. Drink water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty.
Sun Protection
The Colorado sun is intense, especially at elevation. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.
Weather Awareness
Summer thunderstorms can develop quickly. If you see dark clouds or hear thunder, seek shelter. Lightning is a real danger on exposed terrain.
Canyon Safety
Stay on marked trails and behind barriers at viewpoints. The canyon walls are steep and the rock can be loose. Keep children close.
River Safety
Always listen to your guide during rafting trips. Wear your life jacket properly. Don't attempt to swim in the Arkansas River without experienced guidance.
Wildlife
The area is home to deer, rattlesnakes, and other wildlife. Give animals space, watch where you step on trails, and store food properly.
