Safety Basics for River Activities

The Arkansas River demands respect. Here's what you should know before getting on the water.

Safety Basics for River Activities

The Arkansas River is beautiful and exhilarating—but it's also powerful moving water that deserves respect. Most visitors experience it safely through commercial rafting operations; here's how to keep it that way.

Go with Professionals

Commercial rafting companies like Royal Gorge Rafting employ trained guides who know the river intimately. They understand water levels, weather patterns, and rescue techniques. This expertise is worth the cost of a guided trip, especially for newcomers to whitewater.

Guides handle safety briefings before each trip. Pay attention. The information about holding the paddle, what to do if you fall out, and where to position yourself isn't just routine—it's genuinely important.

Life Jacket Reality

Wear your life jacket properly—snug, with all buckles secured. It only works if you're wearing it when you hit the water. Guides will fit you with the right size; don't loosen it "for comfort" during the trip.

Physical Preparation

Be honest about your abilities when booking. Commercial trips are designed for guests without prior experience, but some sections require reasonable fitness. If you have health conditions that might be relevant, mention them when booking.

Hydration and Sun

River safety includes avoiding heat exhaustion and dehydration. Drink water before, during (when practical), and after trips. The sun reflects off water, increasing exposure—sunscreen matters.

Don't Swim Alone

The Arkansas River isn't a swimming pool. Cold water, currents, and submerged hazards make casual swimming dangerous. If you want to cool off, do it at designated safe areas or under guide supervision.

Alcohol and Rivers Don't Mix

Save the celebration for after you're off the water. Impaired judgment and fast-moving water create preventable tragedies.
