The Complete Guide to Rafting the Arkansas River

The Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge region consistently ranks as one of America's most rafted waterways. Here's everything you need to know to make the most of your experience.

Understanding the River Sections

Bighorn Sheep Canyon: The most popular family section. Class II-III rapids provide excitement without overwhelm. Named for the bighorn sheep often spotted on canyon walls. Most outfitters welcome children as young as 4-6 here.

The Numbers: Class IV-V whitewater named for the numbered rapids. Located upstream toward Buena Vista, this section demands experience and fitness. Not available during low water.

Royal Gorge: The signature section—Class IV-V rapids beneath 1,000-foot canyon walls, with the famous bridge overhead. Requires minimum age and often previous experience. Spring runoff creates the biggest water.

Choosing Your Trip

Half-day trips cover one section and work well for first-timers and families. Full-day trips combine sections and include riverside lunch. Multi-day expeditions exist for those wanting deeper immersion.

What Outfitters Provide

Expect: life jacket, paddle, helmet, wetsuit or splash jacket when needed, transportation to put-in, and professional guides. You bring: swimsuit or quick-dry clothing, water shoes with straps, sunscreen, and signed waivers.

Seasonal Considerations

Spring (May-June): Highest water, biggest rapids, coldest temperatures. Best for thrill-seekers with experience.

Summer (July-August): Peak season with warm water and moderate rapids. Ideal for families and first-timers.

Fall (September): Lower water, smaller crowds, comfortable temperatures. More relaxed experience.

Booking Tips

Summer weekends fill up—book 2-4 weeks ahead minimum. Morning trips often have calmer conditions before afternoon winds develop. Ask about photography packages if you want professional shots of your adventure.

Safety Reality

Commercial rafting has an excellent safety record when you go with licensed outfitters. Listen to your guide's instructions. They know the river intimately and have your safety as priority one.
