Walk through three historic tunnels cut into the canyon walls on the route of Canon City's old irrigation pipeline.
Walking Through History
Tunnel Drive follows the route of a late nineteenth-century redwood-stave irrigation pipeline that also supplied water to Canon City. The city stopped using it in 1974. The route passes through three tunnels blasted through the canyon walls, offering a walking experience unlike any other in the region.
The Walk
The trail surface is relatively level, following the gentle grade of the old pipeline route. The tunnels are short enough to see daylight throughout but long enough to provide welcome shade on hot summer days. Canyon views open up between tunnel sections.
Access and Tips
Free parking is available at the trailhead. Bring a light source if you want to explore tunnel details, though natural light is sufficient for walking through. The trail is suitable for families. The short stretch from the trailhead is paved; after that the surface is gravel, so wheelchair and stroller users should plan for it (all-terrain wheels help). The City of Canon City lists the trail as having handicap access.
