Tunnel Drive Trail
Walk through historic railroad tunnels carved into the canyon walls, experiencing a unique piece of Royal Gorge railroad history.
Walking Through History
Tunnel Drive follows an old railroad grade that once carried trains into the Royal Gorge. The route passes through three tunnels blasted through the canyon walls, offering a walking experience unlike any other in the region.
The Walk
The trail surface is relatively level, following the gentle grade required for railroad operations. The tunnels are short enough to see daylight throughout but long enough to provide welcome shade on hot summer days. Canyon views open up between tunnel sections.
Access and Tips
Free parking is available at the trailhead. Bring a light source if you want to explore tunnel details, though natural light is sufficient for walking through. The trail is suitable for families and offers accessible sections for wheelchairs and strollers.
