Kayaking the Arkansas River
Paddle the Arkansas River on your own terms—inflatable kayaks and hardshell options available for those seeking a more personal whitewater experience.
While traditional rafting remains the most popular way to experience the Arkansas River, kayaking offers a more intimate connection with the water. Several outfitters in the Royal Gorge region rent inflatable kayaks (duckies) or offer guided kayak trips for those who prefer paddling their own boat.
Inflatable Kayaks
Duckies—inflatable one- or two-person kayaks—provide an accessible entry point for kayaking. They're stable, forgiving, and allow paddlers to control their own line through rapids. Many rafting companies offer duckie trips as an alternative to traditional raft adventures.
River Sections for Kayaking
Bighorn Sheep Canyon offers the best combination of accessible rapids and scenic beauty for recreational kayakers. The Numbers section upstream provides more technical challenges for experienced paddlers. The Royal Gorge itself is generally reserved for expert kayakers with proven Class IV-V skills.
Getting Started
Most visitors rent inflatable kayaks through local outfitters who provide equipment, basic instruction, and shuttle service. Previous paddling experience helps but isn't required for beginner sections. Wear appropriate river clothing and expect to get wet.
