What to Pack for a Day in the Gorge (Wind, Sun, Water)

The high-desert climate and canyon environment create conditions that differ from what many visitors expect. Pack accordingly and you'll enjoy your day more.

The Sun Factor

At elevation, UV radiation intensifies. The Colorado sun can burn exposed skin surprisingly quickly, especially when you're distracted by scenery or river spray. Pack:

  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+ minimum, waterproof for rafting)
  • Hat with a brim
  • Sunglasses with UV protection
  • Lip balm with SPF

Reapply sunscreen every two hours—more often if you're wet.

The Wind Factor

Canyon breezes can turn cool, especially at the rim. Even on warm days, a light layer proves useful:

  • Light jacket or windbreaker
  • Long sleeves as backup
  • Bandana or neck gaiter for dust

The Water Factor

If rafting is on your agenda, pack specifically for getting wet:

  • Quick-dry clothing or swimsuit
  • Water shoes with straps (flip-flops float away)
  • Complete change of dry clothes for after
  • Waterproof phone case or leave it at the car
  • Towel

Universal Essentials

Regardless of activity:

  • Water bottle (1L minimum per person)
  • Snacks
  • Cash (some vendors are cash-only)
  • Camera
  • Comfortable walking shoes

For Extended Adventures

If you're staying overnight, vacation rentals in the area provide space to store extra gear and a place to dry out rafting clothes. Having a home base makes multi-day adventures more comfortable.
